Dog Sledding is on of the most underappreciated forms of transportation still existing in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and yes, even Michigan. What better thing to do than to turn a legitimate form of getting around in freezing areas into an adventurous tourist attraction by romanticizing it through a Disney animated film? Sure there are films out there like Herbie and Cars but nothing is as heart wrenching as Balto. Balto says, “I am a mode of transportation that will bring medicine to you and save your children growing in courage and bravery along the way, but still being cuddly and loving after my near death experience in the end.” Can a taxi service promise that? In colder areas you can find places to rent dog sled teams (from 5-11 dogs) and go on a mini tour or an all day tour. You can rent seal skin sloth and warm boots but you have to have your own gloves, socks, and underwear. Also, the sled dogs can be used as domestic pets, show dogs, or racing dogs (in famous races like the Yukon Quest). Alaskan Huskies are the most popular dogs used and bred for this purpose. In Alaska it is 350 for four days and 30 dollars for 2 hours. Which is an awesome price I think. It is arguably the most silent form of transportation too! In previous times and also in the places mentioned before dog sleds were used for deliveries, errands, and transportation in general around town. (Also available in New York and Massachusetts!)
