Sheryl for President
Sheryl Sandberg knows what’s up. And yes this book may be mostly useful for a certain class of women, but I’m sure there are other books addressing issues of different classes and work improvement. Although reading books are certainly not the solution by any means to class and work issues the ideas in the books, if implemented correctly and on a large scale, are certainly worthwhile. So, after acknowledging that this particular book was chosen for this class because we as students at TPC have opportunities to utilize her professional advice I will tell you why Sheryl is great. First off, she is awesome for admitting that dealing with pregnancy is the WORST. Oh my goodness, when she was waddling across the parking lot and talking about morning sickness I wanted to cut off the entire bottom half of my body and spend the rest of my life with my top half working in the career world. BUT family is one of the most beautiful things in the world so I’m thankful for her advice. She finds the perfect balance between jumping on opportunities and knowing when to say no. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to master that. Also, what she said about ladies speaking up. Woah. That is so true! Guys are always yelling and I always think “My goodness. How rude. Calm down” but I guess that is what needs to be done. I didn’t really think of that as a gendered thing, I just thought of it as a manners thing. But I guess manners are gendered too? I took so many etiquette classes when I was younger. I thought guys did that too? I’m pretty sure they did. What if you’re just someone who does not like being loud? What if you would rather listen and reflect? Does that mean you should change your fundamental ways of being to fit into the corporate world? Serious question. Also, if being successful as a woman means people won’t like you, I think that is fine. Less time wasted with people you wouldn’t like in the first place. My dad always told me that true friends will be happy for your successes.
